indoor plants & how to care for them

One of my absolute favorite ways to add style and life into my home is bringing in multiple plants! No you don't have to have a green thumb to keep certain plants alive. Yes you heard that right! There are certain plants that are truly un-killable and have easy care: The Snake Plant and the ZZ Plant are known for being both drought and low light tolerant – a rarity for succulent plants. They won’t fumble if you forget to water them once in a while, they might even appreciate it! These plants are just a couple options that are great for beginners and are beautiful to look at.

I always thought that bringing the outdoors inside was a great way to connect more with nature and making your space feel more at home. Plants are one of the best ways in our opinion to add color to any space and can be a great way to fill a spot.

Here are a list of some plants of different variety that can either be easy to take care of with your kids or just pretty to look at.

Alocasia 'Polly’

Alocasia 'Polly’

Alocasia 'Polly' is an interesting, easy to grow, beloved house plant. A hybridized terestrial Aroid, 'Polly' grows in clumps of five or six leaves. Typically as one leaf grows, one will drop. This is very common with Alocasia. They like bright to medium light, to dry out in between watering, and for their leaves to be misted. Alocasia can sometimes struggle with pests like spider mites, so it's important to check the leaves and keep them moist. It’s always good to wipe your leaves down with any plant every once in a while and especially if you put them outside for some extra sunshine, clean the leave with a cloth when bringing it back inside.

Calathea Ornata

Calathea Ornata

Calathea ornata is a strikingly beautiful tropical plant with dark green leaves and pink stripes that appear to be painted on. Ornata like to stay evenly moist and prefer distilled or filtered water. Humidity is also really important for all Calathea. Misting, pebble trays, or if possible putting them in the bathroom are great ways to keep humidity morale high for this plant. If you start to see crispy brown leaves, it's probably due to low humidity. Grow this plant in medium to low light!

Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos

EPIPREMNUM AUREUM 'GOLDEN POTHOS' Thrives in bright, indirect light, but can tolerate medium to low indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun. Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. Humidity: Don’t sweat it. Any humidity level will do. Most houseplants prefer temps in the 65°F-85°F range (18°C-30°C). It’s best not to let it go below 60°F (15°C). Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. Mix in ingredients such as perlite or lava rocks to increase soil aeration as need.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

FICUS LYRATA 'FIDDLE LEAF FIG' Needs Bright, Filtered Light. Will rapidly deteriorate in dim lighting. Watering - Keep soil evenly moist at all times. (about 2-3x per week) Do not overwater or leave plant sitting in water. Fertilizer - Feed bi-weekly with a weak green plant liquid solution during the growing season. Repotting -Change dirt and transplant to a a larger pot annually. This plant naturally wants to become large, and therefore needs both spacial height and room for roots to extend.

Snake Plant

Snake Plant

Snake Plant: Water your Snake Plants every 2-8 weeks. The watering schedule will vary for you depending on your home environment, type of soil mix, and pot size. Even though Sansevierias prefer medium light (which is about 10′ away from the west or south window), they’ll also tolerate low light and high light. Because root rot is one of its main issues that kill these plants, I’d recommend a fast and well-draining soil to help prevent this. When it comes to humidity or dryness, these plants will feel comfortable however you feel comfortable just keep them away from cold drafts and heating or air conditioning vents.

ZZ Plant

ZZ Plant

ZZ Plant: Water every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. Humidity: Don’t sweat it. Average home humidity is fine; can tolerate dry air. Temperature: Most houseplants prefer temps in the 65°F-85°F range (18°C-30°C). It’s best not to let it go below 60°F (15°C). Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. Mix in ingredients such as perlite or lava rocks to increase soil aeration as need.
