shelf styling

Styling a shelf is much like shopping at your favorite store. You want to surround yourself with things that you love, value, and cherish.

Before even beginning to style a shelf, I like to determine the use of it. Is it to be a library full of books that are easily accessible? Or is it a bookshelf of items to be looked at but not touched? Or is it a shelf to be organized for kids art supplies or toys? Kitchen?

The answer to these questions greatly determines the way to tackle each shelf. So, let’s break it down by use:

Display Shelves

The best way to accomplish a unique and styled bookshelf is to start with a fresh canvas and pull everything off your shelves. I like to shop the home and pull items that would work on the shelves. Sometimes it’s necessary to purchase additional items but you’d be surprised by what you can find in your own home.

Lay everything out and start placing items on the shelves in pairs of threes. I also like to think of the shelves as V’s. It helps to have the “heavier” items anchor the top shelf.

Library Bookshelves

The main thing here is that you don’t more than likely don’t want to feel like you live in a library, unless you actually DO HAVE a library in your home. With books, I like to break up their orientation so that not everything is vertically stacked. I mean, even Barnes and Noble does this on their shelves.

Think beyond the book. Remove covers. Change the book orientation. Face the pages out. Have some fun.

Surround Yourself With Things You Love

Ultimately, this is the most important lesson. Love what you surround yourself with. I give you permission to take time to collect items over time to complete your shelves. Every shelf in my home is a work in progress that is constantly evolving and changing.

Reach out if you have any questions!
